Just sitting around

If you see yourself as an artist and you function in a studio and you're not a painter, if you don't start out with some canvas, you do all kinds of things - you sit in a chair or pace around. And then the question goes back to what art is?
And art is what an artist does, just sitting around in the studio.

Als iemand opmerkt dat een bepaald persoon iets professioneel doet, dan is mijn eerste gedachte dat degene iets goed kan. Uiteenlopend van goed vioolspelen of schilderen tot het begeleiden van mensen of het managen van een bedrijf. Dat is wat ik het eerste zie. Maar als ik wat langer stil sta, merk ik dat zich een ander stuk van 'professioneel zijn' aanmonstert. Niet zo duidelijk zichtbaar, maar iets dat doordringt in hoe ik de dingen doe, de vragen die ik stel, de koers die ik volg.....Iets dat vooraf gaat aan mijn doen en laten. Iets dat er is, ook wanneer ik 'just sitting around'. Misschien zelfs juist dan, vanuit dat punt wordt het handelen aangewakkerd.

Being there

Just sitting around. I was sitting around today in my studio. Holding my little son, who was going to sleep, he let me work during the afternoon, so I went into this mood of just sitting around and thinking. Thinking about what I am doing, looking at the wall, where drawings and unfinished drawings are mixed together. Broad light comes from the windows from outside.
I like this quotation very much. For me it says a lot. Perhaps it was said in the context of hanging out with people, but I see it more for being with yourself - alone- in the moment and your thoughts.
